The point is that FFmpeg's and MPlayer's developers do not have time to
track all various packaged version to see which one has what problem. And
perforce, they themselves work on the current head of the development
version.

Therefore, unless your problem trivial enough that its solutions comes
immediately, you will always be asked to test the development version.

The alternative is to seek help from the package maintainers: hopefully they
will forward relevant bug reports upstream. But this is a more limited
approach, as the community is more fractioned.
