Further experimentation shows that both have problems.  xv doesn't
allow adjustment of brightness or contrast.  x11 does but won't go full
screen.  Letting mplayer choose, full screen is possible and brightness
and contrast can be adjusted, with only the seg fault on quit as a
problem.
