I can confirm this behavior for a real and powerful Nvidia hardware and 
recent Nvidia drivers. I get

[vdpau] Failed VDPAU decoder rendering: An invalid pointer was provided.

too. Besides of that, the MPEG-2 video plays fine. No luck with h264.
