I did not get a response to this post but I found this fix by trial and
error:
mencoder surviving.AVI -o SurvivingProgress.avi -ovc lavc -oac pcm
-lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4
but I would still like to know why there is a problem with these videos
in the first place . .
