I configured the LCD TV screen as a second X display in nvidia-settings, as you suggested, and it works!  The tearing goes away.  Thanks a bunch!

As explained by Phil.

If your trying to play on both the monitor and TV you will only get 
vsync on one of them.

I don't know if you can choose which to sync to with nvidia drivers, but 
it's worth looking.

Maybe the easiest thing to do would be to set up a second screen - I 
don't know centos (or any distro) or what desktop you use, so can't say 
what exactly you should do - maybe nvidia driver options will let you 
set the TV as a separate screen.
