Which MPlayer version is this?
I suspect it is heavily outdated, I suggest compiling a new version
as a first step (or alternatively try some PPA that contains up-to-date
versions, I found
https://launchpad.net/~mc3man/+archive/mplayer-test but I haven't
tested it, so no promises that it actually works well).
