Yes, but only the field rate ones, there are 3 to choose from and
deint=1 is framerate filtered bob and does not show the issue.
It does seem that the deint is the problem in the sense that I just
recoded my test stream to a 50fps mkv with yadif=1 and that plays OK.
A couple of things I notice - frame stepping through any field rate
deinterlacer with mplayer doesn't field step, though you do see one
refresh of the inbetween field, mpv field steps "properly".
My test streams show as 50fps by mplayer, though they won't actually
play fast if I do -nosound -vo null. ffmpeg sees them as 25fps.

Well compared to the number of drops I think I am getting it's not
totally trashed - very jerky with occasional disruption. The reason I
thought mplayer was causing this rather than deint was the noise I
mentioned eg.
mpn -speed 30/25 -lavdopts threads=8 -demuxer lavf -fs -vo

**** Your system is too SLOW to play this! ****

Possible reasons, problems, workarounds:
- Most common: broken/buggy _audio_ driver
- Try -ao sdl or use the OSS emulation of ALSA.
- Experiment with different values for -autosync, 30 is a good start.
- Slow video output
- Try a different -vo driver (-vo help for a list) or try -framedrop!
- Slow CPU
- Don't try to play a big DVD/DivX on a slow CPU! Try some of the
lavdopts,
e.g. -vfm ffmpeg -lavdopts lowres=1:fast:skiploopfilter=all.
- Broken file
- Try various combinations of -nobps -ni -forceidx -mc 0.
- Slow media (NFS/SMB mounts, DVD, VCD etc)
- Try -cache 8192.
- Are you using -cache to play a non-interleaved AVI file?
- Try -nocache.
