[MPlayer-users] General: Relation mplayer ffmpeg

Hello,
I am curious how mplayer and ffmpeg work together. So I am on Arch Linux
and when I build mplayer I have to download an ffmpeg snapshot. A
specific one, not the latest one. Even if I have ffmepg installed. So I
guess I need the header files of a specific version. But what for?
Does mplayer compile it's own version of ffmpeg?
I would be grateful for an overview.
