for non sample-atomic audio (i.e. pcm) it holds the minimal decodable
unit of audio, not any group of samples.

what is a 'line'? imo this is confusing. it's not the text which fits
on a single screen line, but rather all the text for a single
presentation moment. is this a better definition?
