Never used Mac OS X but simply going to the
build/generic directory for xvid and then:

./configure
make
make install

Then ./configure for mplayer should detect xvid (if
not then try adding --with-extraincdir=/usr/local and
--with-extralibdir=/usr/local to configure for mplayer)
