You are the one who committed code which violates the rules. Committing
code which violates the rules, when you have not succeeded in getting
those rules changed, could be argued to constitute an opening move in
just the sort of battle being referred to here; under that
interpretation, Rich would at most merely have been firing back.

If you do not like the rules, you are free to advocate that they be
changed (as indeed you have done); however, as they have not been
changed yet, you are obligated to abide by them. If you are not willing
to do so, you should not be committing to the project which they govern.

You do seem to be a capable and competent developer, and certainly more
active than many - but you are neither the sole nor even the primary
developer on this project, and no more than anyone else do you have the
authority to ignore the project's rules just because you don't like
them.

I can certainly understand your perspective; it reminds me of the kind
of frustration I have often felt over what seemed to me to be arbitrary,
inappropriate and even nonsensical rules governing something which
mattered to me, and indeed I have sometimes simply ignored such rules
when I could get away with it. I can also see sense in some of your
arguments in favor of your position, although I personally am reluctant
to agree with them. Neither of those facts, however, changes the
situation one iota.
