And what exactly would them "having changed" mean? That not even Rich
sends flames? That's unlikely to happen. That I convince most developers
to use similar style themselves so that they actively support being able
to write code in the same way? That's unlikely to happen either, at
least not before there are more examples of such code in MPlayer
already. That most developers believe that what I do at least does not
have significant enough drawbacks to make it worth trying to force me to
do otherwise if I write useful code and strongly prefer that way myself?
For all I know that's already the case.

There are no "rules" I feel obligated to abide by, beyond common sense
about what would be good for development and what not. If you try to
list exactly what are the rules that everyone is "obligated" to follow I
think you'll find you cannot define a sensible set yourself.
