I already thought about the same, but didn't have the time yet to do it.

However you should use unrarlib for this purpose, it allows extration to disc 
and memory (mem is preferred in this case). Unrarlib itself is free and I 
even have an agreement with their developers to use it under the GPL inside 
mplayer.

As the lib is very small I attached it.
