[MPlayer-dev-eng] Why MAX_PACKS and MAX_PACK_BYTES ?

Hi,
searching in the source tree  it seems that the only use of MAX_PACKS 
and MAX_PACK_BYTES is to
set a threshold to block demuxer->audio and demuxer->video to be 
refilled; the question is why?
Can anyone explain why the fifos shouldn't be refilled? and the reason 
for those values ? (they seem to be based
on euristhics)
