Works for me (although I haven't tried anything more complicated than
pausing).

While we're at status line can someone explain to me this:
help/help_mp-en.h:
#define MSGTR_Paused "\n  =====  PAUSE  =====\r"

The \n at the beginning causes the text to be printed on a new line,
preserving previous status line.
Therefore when I pause playback several times I get a nice set of status
lines from several random moments, which IMHO looks ugly.
Simply removing this \n fixes this (or maybe it's desired behavior, in
which case I'd like to know this so I can sit on a proper patch to make
it an option).
