Now this number is interesting. On my laptop (clocked down
to 600MHz) it takes between 2s (not in cache) and 0.03s (in cache).

As you can see from these numbers (and also if you look at the code)
MPlayers start time is dominated by the time it takes to load
the binary from the disk. Linking and initialization of MPlayer
do not even contribute a little bit.

If you run a frontend for MPlayer (which was the start of
this discussion) then it's most likely that you have MPlayer
in cache already or will load it anyways. Thus you'll have
to invest the 2s to load the binary somewhen anyways.

But then, that's just my opinion.
