You are right in that caching does mitigate the problem quite a bit.
But still the issue the patch addresses is a genuine bug, and it
solves it by adding a very minimal amount of code. So it's up to
the MPlayer developers (yourself included) to decide what they want
to do with it. My preference as a user is to run MPlayer once at
startup rather than four times as in the current KPlayer version or
six times as in the next one. Hence the patch.
