Thanks to Reimar's comment I've made a different, better approach. Now, each
font file has a charset definition:

  image = imagefile[, charset]

(DOCS will be changed before commit.) The default is ISO-8859-1 if this
definition is missing, i.e. for all font files so far. (Extension to UTF-8
encoding later possible.)

Conversion takes place from MSG_CHARSET to the font charset, and it's done
somewhere else so that there is only one call necessary. In order that the
patch is easily readable, I've attached a diff from r32799, i.e. before I've
made my first change concerning message translation.

I can adjust English and German documentation, but what about the other
languages? Will translators automatically realize that changes must be made?
