not different machines, but differnet soundcards.
For vdr I use a Trident 4DWave with spdif and alsadrivers and for mplayer
I've bought a SB Live Player 5.1 and use it with the emu10k drivers from
creative.

beta10 doesn't work with SB Live and ac3 (several people reported this,
but the beta9 should work).

for mplayer the drivers from creative works fine for me (out of the
box).

I've made a little patch for play-ac3, so it works with vdr.
I will send it to you, if I've access to it.
