No, fbdev actually works. (it did before, I though I had written so...)
mplayer -v says (lots of other things and then):

fbdev: visual: 4       
fbdev: FB_TYPE_PACKED_PIXEL OK

Modechange works as well. Only a little speedup would be nice (yeah, I know, 
my machine is too slow; not your fault)

seperate file, please. mplayer is great for looking at running downloads, so 
files should not be touched.
