I tried some older binaries, but actual improvement is fast so it's hard to
catch up. From what I have read by others (Forum @ DivX / Xvid / Doom9) it
is right now technological superior (luma masking, better bit distribution,
upcoming GordianKnot support with Nandub .stats etc.)
But there are still some bugs in, like misplaced macroblocks, pink and gray
MBs etc. Last night I found transcode 0.5.1 to support xvid and I want to
play around with it. But I am not very familiar with transcode. Is it only
buld for DVD conversion or could I try to convert my VDR recordings?
CVS of Xvid is easily compiled and installed and transcode simply accesses
this library. So no messing around in the application as long as there is no
change to the API. So this could be a comfortable way to support it with
MPlayer/Mencoder also.
I also thought that I read about a constant quality mode for Xvid. Ah, and
they improved recently the decompression of DivX/Xvid, now reaching DivX
performance.
To me it seems as they support Linux better than DivX and they are more open
to suggestions. And improvements could be checked on code level, no stories
about 78% performance increase by tuning compiler options :(
So long,
