[MPlayer-users] whats the best codec to use for backing up dvds?

im just wondering whats the best codec to use, to back up dvds so as 
to be able to play them back both on win and linux?

i did the two pass thing and it worked great, but wouldnt play on windows
only lin

btw, i had been farting around with 2 pass encodeing on win for a while
but never got any where, cause i kept getting audio synch troubles i
couldnt overcome, so i was stuck with flasking, but this mencoder hooked
me right up  with just 2 lil commnds...., hats off :)
