You`re right, the problem is due to my compiler, when using all those 
configure switches the problem is gone (the video that`s generated isn't 
good though, it's very dark).  But what I don't get is why gcc 2.95.3 won`t 
work while 2.96 does.  Do you think it might have something to do with 2.96 
generating code for the 'athlon' target?  (pentiumpro for 2.95.3)
