It certainly does not disappear after an arbitrary number of reboots in my
case, but - can you just tell me what are your hdparm settings, when
dvd-playing works (hdparm -v /dev/hdX), where is your /dev/dvd linked to,
and what chipset and DVD-drive have you got?
