If you use /dev/radeon_vid then you can be sure that BES is used.
Else mplayer will not work and will be terminated with error message.

K6-300 is not very powerfull hardware.
Indeed to have successful speed you need with radeon_dvd driver or similar.
But ATI hides DVD related info (even for GATOS and X11 developers).

O'k - you've reached maximal video performance.
minor correction: '-fs -zoom' will give correct aspect ratio but will not affect on speed.
Also try play with -vc and -ac options.
