Use something like this:

cvs -z3
-d:pserver:anonymous at cvs.mplayer.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/mplayer co -D
"2001-05-09" main

This will checkout the version dated 2001-05-09. You
should create an extra directory before doing this,
so you don't mess up you current version.

You can then upgrage on a day-by-day (or week-by-week)
basis by increasing the date.
