My own very simple system:
(works the same way with 2 cheap cards):
It works the same way:
/dev/dsp (/dev/dsp0) for the first card
and /dev/dsp1 for the second card
Just connected 2 speakers to each card and I got a 'four speaker' system.
(I can also very simple tune the output of the 2 different cards)
(/dev/dsp is a oss compatible device because I use alsa)

I guess it is a bit more difficult to setup but it works the same way...
