Mplayer clocks things based on the sound.  Probably what is happening is
that mplayer is asking for say 22050 bps, and your card is setting 44100 -
so sound flows at twice the expected speed.

Look for a line like this when mplayer starts up:

 > audio_setup: using 44100 Hz samplerate (requested: 44100)

I suppose its also possible that your card driver is claiming to set the
right speed but in fact doesn't.
