I tried strace, in log I found only:
open("/home/jp/.mplayer/codecs.conf", O_RDONLY) = 3
(...)
write(1, "Reading /home/jp/.mplayer/codecs"..., 66) = 66

of course I tried different mpg files

Then I realized what is problem - I put "vc=odivx" in mplayer.conf :-)
So mplayer tried to decode mpeg file with odivx, and it failed.
