Yep - the Voodoo3 does the same - detects a connected video output at boot
time.
But I wanted to get 720x576 resolution working directly (from X), and
wanted overscan in order to fill my TV screen. The voodoo uses a bt869
vga->video converter chip, which can be controlled via the lm_sensors
package. It was quite easy to add support for a 720x576 mode to that
driver.

Well - you and I are tackling the same project. But for me I want X. I
can then use many additional applications.
