Indeed.  But should not _cause_ lavc to create files way bigger than
the prescribed bitrate.

Yes, typo.  Was actually vcodec.  I didn't have cut'n'paste.  As for
the vme, that is just what an example on the list used.  I removed the
vme option (use default) now.  I have also tried adding vpass=1 (which
should be default as well) and I am still getting a 2GB/h encoding.

Indeed.  But not as much as 2-3GB/h.

Good catch.  I didn't.  For some reason the libavcoded in my mplayer
directory failed to cvs update.  I just did it now, and did a make
there as well as in .. to rebuild mplayer and mencoder.  No change.  I
am still getting a 2GB/h file with the options:

-ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vpass=1:vbitrate=1250:vhq:vqmin=2:vratetol=40000 -oac copy

Maybe it's time to post some output of mencoder with a "-v" or two.
