What does mencoder tell you after encoding ?
A few weeks ago I always got way too big files, too since I forgot to
recode the AC3 audio track(s) in my recordings which gave me something
like "Audio stream .. size: 1996873144 bytes"

Since your input material is from an analog recording you shouldn't have
that AC3 problem anyway, so you should have an output somewhat similar
to this:

Video stream: 949.933 kbit/s (118741 bps) size: 627031633 bytes \
                5280.640 secs 132005 frames

Audio stream: 146.747 kbit/s (18343 bps) size: 96873144 bytes \
                5281.104 secs

The audio stream should be way smaller than the video stream. So your
command line option "-oac copy" makes me a bit suspicious ;)

Maybe it would be helpful to see the output of mplayer playing that
particular source file...
