I use a Matrox Marvel G400-TV, which uses the mga_vid
driver, and plays to the TV using the framebuffer. 
Works great, though I haven't tried any other cards,
so I don't know how it compares.

If/when you're ready to set it up, the docs at the
MPlayer website give excellent instructions on how to
do it, using your method-of-choice.
