Yep, tried '-ao alsa9:hw:0,3' with manual 'IEC958 Optical Raw' too; no 
luck.  I would have tried alsa9 rc3, but that didn't build for me, so I 
opted for CVS.  Maybe I'll try rc2 or the latest CVS.  I'll let y'all know 
how it goes.
