Good evening, everyone. I couldn't help but respond to this discussion. I
have a GeForce2 MX400 running on a Via MVP3-based motherboard (Tyan
S1590). I also use a K6-2/350 processor. I have noticed a few lockups
with this video card. But, ever since I redone my bios settings, I have
kept my lockups to a minimum. I have not regretted buying this video
card. This card far exceeds my old Diamond Stealth 3D 4000 (with which
XFree86 3.3.x and upto XF 4.0.2b2 did not cooperate). I am running
AGPGART with the nVidia X server. I also limited my AGP aparture to no
more than 32Mb.
In my case, I found out that my aparture size was the culprit once I tried
using a 4Mb aparture size. I also disabled WS 1 writes and fast writes in
the BIOS. Upon disabling AGP via XF86Config-4, I had no more problems
with the lockups. (Option "NvAGP" "0" in the device section).
Then, I try the smallest AGP aparture in my bios (Award) along with
disabling all shadowing/caching and resetting my SDRAM speeds to "normal."
Upon using 4Mb aparture and not using any NvAGP settings, I got better
performance and no lock ups. So, I then increased my aparture to 32Mb.
Still no problems. Then for the fun of it, I tried using 128Mb aparture
(I got 160Mb ram). still no lockups.
So, my problem was the agp write settings and the caching/shadowing in my
bios. I just want to get my 2 cents in.
Laters.
