The same for me it seems that vesa don't Work at all.

I use -vo fbdev:vidix and works ,but scaling is not good, but usefull

Not tried,or domn't work I can't remember.
I use XFree and works well for me

I don't belive Xfree can't be used on a well firewalled server.
I used tv out only with mplayer 0.5-cvs-I-can't-remember-the-date
and I used fbdev ( not sure ) for output , worked but image wasn't
centered on TV (few black band on a side), an there was no way to change.
