Both I would say, maybe especially to users, as some major distros now 
include 2.96 by default. Not the least Mandrake, who are aiming for the sort 
of users who would be craving a movie-player the most. When that is said, I 
understand why the developers do not want to support this version of gcc, but 
disagree with the fact that you put stumbling blocks against it in configure. 
2.96 was the only version available to me that would compile mplayer at all 
for a while (0.60 finally compiled on gcc-3.0.2). Although I'm fairly 
advanced as desktop-users go, trying to upgrade to 2.95 on my system would be 
a bit more than I care to bother with for one app. 

What I'm trying to say is : State that you don't support (i.e. take 
bug-reports and requests for aid) by people who use 2.96 because it is buggy, 
but don't exclude them from compiling your app.
(Just my 2 cents, I promise to not bring this up again)
