I always use:

/usr/local/bin/mencoder -ovc divx4 -oac mp3lame -x 768 -y 576 -pp
0x20000 -o /mnt/fat32/output2.avi -divx4opts br=1800 -sws 2 -pass 1
001.vdr

/usr/local/bin/mencoder -ovc divx4 -oac mp3lame -x 768 -y 576 -pp
0x20000 -o /mnt/fat32/output2.avi -divx4opts br=1800 -sws 2 -pass 2
001.vdr

but i'm using 1800-bitrate for my VDR-Recodings
