hey, why don't you use VBR mp3? at an average 80 or 96kbit, it works very
well, the codec may go up to 160kbit for complicated sound and down to
32kbit for silnce. yes, some old windows players has problem with such
files, but wmp and the modern players play it fine, also the linux players.

i always use 96 or 128k average rate with VBR mp3 for encoding.
