Same here. I also recommend uninstalling DivX before installing ffdshow;
I've run into conflicts between the two which cause the players to
crash.

Also, when ripping NTSC DVDs, -ofps 23.976 is almost always a very good
option to use. Basically, the source video is really 23.976 fps, but the
mpeg headers on the DVD say it is 29.97, so without using -ofps mencoder
will have to duplicate frames in order to bring the fps up. Read about
telecine / 3:2 pulldown if you want to know why.
