Note that the simplest try is also falling in an interesting way :
mencoder -v -dvd-device /dev/acd1c -dvd 1 -oac copy -ovc copy -o zz.avi

It produce an .avi which when played shows ~75% of the screen black
with some blocks decoded but with every odd or even line black.
