The first encode was from cd: it locked, but I thought it was the
"usual" problem with my shitty cd reader. Had no time to wait for
timeouts, and rebooted. Then ripped with mplayer to file.vcd -- all ok.
Then encoded the first time, and all was ok, except that the avi file
was bigger than the .vcd (about 10 megs more...). So I tried again with
a lower bitrate and got the second lock.

Have enough disk free for at least 4 or 5 outfiles... df never got near
0...

I'll try these too.
But I suspect that the source file is in some way responsible... It's a
strange file:
1) starts with a lot of 0x00
2) it's a slideshow (images from a digital camera)
Maybe just this kind of file can trigger strange behaviours ?

BTW, even with br=200 I still get an avi bigger than the source... Mah !

What I really don't understand is why it locks only sometimes, even with
the really same command line !

Nope. It could have simplified tracing the problem...

BYtE,
 Diego.
