[MPlayer-users] mencoder often COMPLETLY locks up my machine

try to play with mencoder's options, try to find which one caus ethe lock
if yo uencode directly from dvd/cd, try to copy stream to hdd and encode
from them. tro -o /dev/null, maybe disk out problem... etc
try other codecs, no audio or no video encoding etc

or even 'mencoder -help' cause hangup for you?
