I ran into that same sort of thing with a DVD I recently bought. I found 
that -sid 1 was closed-captioning,
2 was the subtitles-for-non-english I was looking for, and the rest were 
other languages.

I'd say just start trying each sid sequentially until you find what you 
want. Does anyone here know if DVDs
specify any kind of "default subtitle ID"?
