yes... it works...

basically:
at first: the audio stream is vorbis.
ogg is the container (something like avi)

you can't really put vorbis in avi , so you put the video-data into the
ogg. so you get an ogg file with (for example) divx5 video and vorbis
audio. the extension is by agreement .ogm

mplayer can play them

to create them you need moritz bunkus's ogm tools
(http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/ogmtools/)
