there are also drivers for free afaik, i'm not an expert on oss drivers,
never used them, but i think they work quite good from what i've heard.
don't know exactly what license they are using, but i guess it's not gpl.

alsa is gpl / lgpl, so if you have a few hours spare ("installing" my
sb live 512 with alsa cost me about 5 minutes) alsa might be your choice.
at least it's mine :)
