You, of course, want to get the most out of your monitor/gfx card, so you make
a modeline specially for your monitor.

Works just the same way underneath I'm sure. Monitors are all the same, no
matter what OS you use. Windows just happens to come with a neat click-click
interface for stabbing this. And yes, X is totally braindead at that;
requires a restart every time you change the modes.

If you want to be stuck with standard VESA modes ... sure. I certainly don't.

Of course. Otherwise there woudln't be much point in telling X what your
monitor can do...
Switching mode is a silly idea anyway. Use xv/xmga and scale the image like
the rest of us :)
