Dunno, since such svcds are mainly for standalone-players. I don't have one,
and for my vdr-machine mpeg4/ogm is more interesting. I surfed around
yesterday:
maybe this is interesting for you:
ftp://ftp.vcdimager.org/pub/vcdimager/contribs - the package
svcd-subtitles.tar.gz seems to provide some information on svcd-subtitles. In
the forum of doom9.org was also a discussion about this. It seems there are 2
types of subtitles. first there are the CVD-type subtitles as I-author does.
About CVD Specs there is a article at vcdhelp.com (mainly as I remember
352x576/520 , mpeg2, playable too on some only vcd-able standalone-dvds)
The second sort of subtitles are the OGT-subs, these seems to be the standard
ones and there seems to be the tool winsubmux, that is able to do that, and
the above package(svcd-subtitles.tar.gz) seems to produce OGT-subs. As I
understood the subs are muxed into the mpeg-stream, so mplex should do this.
On vcdimager.org and vcdhelp.com are too some samples of svcd with subs.
Since I'm not a developer all I can do is to provide infos I find on the net.
Hope this is helpful. Too I fear this isn't the right list to discuss all
this. Dunno about mplayer-abilities to play svcds with switchable subs ...
Steffen
