Only for some -vo.  For example, xv and sdl:dga (and possibly others) use
hardware scaling techniques to fill the screen, so the software scaling of
-zoom isn't required.  And provided you have a CRT rather than an LCD,
enabling -vm to switch to a more appropriate vidmode will probably give
better results than trying to scale a 320x240 movie up to eg. 1024x768

As I understand it, -zoom isn't the default because it is much better to use
some other kind of scaling whenever possible.  If mplayer falls back to
software scaling by default, it should really print out something like
``Using software scaling:  Warning - this could be SLOW''.
