Rich also make sure that you put the skin file itself into the 
/usr/local/share/mplayer/Skins not the file that get extracted so make sure 
that your directory acatully looks like this 
/usr/local/share/mplayer/Skins/filewiththeskin and not 
/usr/local/share/mplayer/Skins/filecontainingtheskin/filewitheskin.Also try 
to copy the skin into the /usr/local/share/mplayer/Skins/default
